When Federal troops temporarily reoccupied the wooded area where McPherson had been killed, they retrieved his body, which was then transported by wagon to Sherman's temporary headquarters at the Augustus Hurt House. An old but cogent joke is about the guy who says the coldest winter he ever spent was one summer in San Francisco.
